“What is a Negro College but a vast college settlement
for the study of a particular set of peculiarly baffling problems?
What more effective or suitable agency could be found in which
to focus the scientific efforts of the great universities of
the North and East than an institution situated in the very
heart of these problems and made centre of careful historical
and statistical research?”W. E. Burghardt Du Bois, Speech to the American Academy of Political and Social Science, 1897
Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois during his tenure at Atlanta University from 1897 to 1910
established a department of sociology and with student assistance conducted research
on Black life. The Negro American Family and other studies were published as
part of the University’s study conference series. They represent pioneering
efforts in American sociological research.
The Atlanta University Center tradition of research on Black life, specifically
on families, has been enriched by many scholars – Drs. Ira De A. Reid,
Horace Mann Bond, Walter Chivers, and others.
