Myron Winslow Adams (b. 1870 d. 1927) began his
affiliation with Atlanta University in 1889 as
a Professor of Greek. In 1896 he was promoted
to Dean, a position he held for 27 years. President
Edward Ware became seriously ill in 1919 and
Adams was asked to serve as Acting President.
He served in this capacity until 1923, when he
was elected fourth President of the University.
During his tenure, high school level classes
were discontinued and course work in business
and finance and summer sessions were added. Also
significant during this period was the establishment
of the cooperative plan with Morehouse and Spelman
Colleges, known as the Atlanta University System.
Under this plan, Atlanta University discontinued
all undergraduate work and devoted its resources
to graduate and professional education, while
Morehouse and Spelman Colleges operated on the
college level. Adams authored A History of Atlanta
University (c. 1929).
The Myron W. Adams Records includes his reports
to the University's Board of Trustees on such matters
as budget, fund-raising, curricula, and improvements
to buildings and grounds. Also, there are class schedules,
course outlines, grade reports, examinations, and
student rosters. Related collection:
