The Atlanta Urban League is a private, nonprofit
social service agency, affiliated with the National
Urban League. Founded in 1920, the Atlanta Urban
League was established to help address some of
the social and economic problems that beset the
Black community. The services of the Atlanta
Urban League are geared toward community development,
health care, employment and housing opportunities
for African Americans.
The Atlanta Urban League Papers document the agency's
activities since its founding, although the bulk
of the collection focuses on the period after World
War II through the early 1980s. The papers consist
of administrative files and include correspondence,
minutes, reports, news clippings, and budget information.
Major series in the papers are files of executive
directors, Grace Towns Hamilton, Robert Thompson,
Harold Arnold and Lyndon Wade; and files of the community
services, housing and employment departments.
