25 linear feet
NOTE: A paper copy
of the finding aid,
with container list,
is available at the
Atlanta University
Center Archives for
in-house consultation
and may be obtained
for a fee.
This collection consists
of Atlanta University
publications such as
catalogs, monographs,
periodicals, and printed
materials including
programs, announcements,
invitations, brochures,
flyers, leaflets, calendars,
and reports. These
materials document
the activities, events,
growth and development
of Atlanta University.
Noted publications
of the University are
the Atlanta University
Bulletin, Phylon, and
Atlanta University
Publications. The Atlanta
University Bulletin
began as a monthly
in June 1883 and in
1910 became a quarterly
in which every fourth
issue was devoted to
the Atlanta University
Catalog listing the
school calendar and
course offerings. The
Bulletin has articles
about events, the academic
program, accomplishments
of alumni, speeches
and sermons that were
delivered at the University
and commentary on political
and educational issues.
Phylon was founded
in 1940 by W.E.B. DuBois,
who served as editor
until 1944. This quarterly
journal was established
to provide a vehicle
for the study and survey
of the fields of race
and culture and includes
articles, essays, research
findings, literary
criticism, and book
reviews. Publication
of a special issue
of Phylon was produced
by Clark Atlanta University,
which accounts for
the span date of this
series extending to
1992. The Atlanta University
Publications is a series
of monographs on topics
pertaining to life,
health, economic development
and social conditions
of African Americans.
The Publications are
selected presentations
made at the annual
Conference for the
Study of Negro Problems
held at Atlanta University.
Many of these monographs
were edited by W.E.B.
DuBois. The series
was published from
1896 to 1917, then
discontinued because
of financial difficulties.
Briefly renewed in
1941, the series was
permanently discontinued
in 1944. The Atlanta
University Publications
were reprinted by Arno
Press in 1969 as Volume
1 and 2 in The American
Negro His History and
Literature.
There are also copies of Atlanta University published
and printed materials in the vertical file collections
and cataloged in the library's book collections.
In addition, such materials may be found among the
Atlanta University Presidential Records and the personal
papers of individuals affiliated with the University. |
