Edward Twichell Ware (b. 1874 d. 1927), son of
Edmund Asa Ware (first President of Atlanta University),
became the University's third president. Edward
Ware began his work with the University after
his graduation from Yale University in 1897,
serving as Northern Secretary, primarily a fund-raising
position. In 1901 his work was expanded with
his appointment as Chaplin of the University.
He was elected President in 1907, a position
he held until 1919. During his presidency, Ware
continued his fund-raising activities and also
strengthened the curriculum adding classes and
extending the normal and preparatory courses
from two and three-year to four-year programs.
The Edward Twichell Ware Records include correspondence,
financial papers, programs, invitations, and reports
documenting the fund-raising efforts, daily operations
of the University and activities such as training
of Negro troops during World War I. Of note is the
extensive correspondence that includes applications
for admissions and for jobs, communications with
philanthropists and other college administrators.
Among the correspondents are Myron Adams, W.E.B.
DuBois, John Hope, James Weldon Johnson, Lucy Laney,
John Slater, and U.S. President William H. Taft. Related collection:
