Florence M. Read Records
1927-1947

7.5 linear feet

NOTE: A paper copy of the finding aid, with container list, is available at the Atlanta University Center Archives for in-house consultation and may be obtained for a fee.

Florence Matilda Read (b. 1886 d. 1973) served as Acting President of Atlanta University from 1936-1937 during the interim period between the passing of John Hope and the election of his successor. She was President of Spelman College from 1927-1953 and also served as Secretary of Atlanta University from 1929-1953.

The bulk of the Florence M. Read Records document her brief tenure as Acting President of Atlanta University. There is information about buildings and grounds, fund-raising, academic departments, the library, and the cooperative efforts among the schools in the Atlanta University System. There is also a small amount of correspondence reports and printed materials about Gammon Theological Seminary, Clark, Morehouse, Morris Brown and Spelman Colleges.
