Florence Matilda Read (b. 1886 d. 1973) served
as Acting President of Atlanta University from
1936-1937 during the interim period between the
passing of John Hope and the election of his
successor. She was President of Spelman College
from 1927-1953 and also served as Secretary of
Atlanta University from 1929-1953.
The bulk of the Florence M. Read Records document
her brief tenure as Acting President of Atlanta University.
There is information about buildings and grounds,
fund-raising, academic departments, the library,
and the cooperative efforts among the schools in
the Atlanta University System. There is also a small
amount of correspondence reports and printed materials
about Gammon Theological Seminary, Clark, Morehouse,
Morris Brown and Spelman Colleges. Related collection:
