Dr. Joy DeGruy, author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: American’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, will be the keynote speaker at the AUC Woodruff Library on Thursday, October 16, 2014, 4:00-6:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

Through the lens of history, Dr. DeGruy explores the impact centuries of slavery and oppression on African-Americans and how the past has influenced the present. Delivering an empowering message, she opens up the discussion of how the African-American community can use the strengths it has gained to heal.  The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and response panel with Dr. Makungu Akinyela (Georgia State University), Christy Garrison-Harrison, MA (Clark Atlanta University), and Dr. Clarissa Myrick-Harris (Morehouse College).

This is the second year of programming for the five-year project “Seeking to Tell a Story: Political Action from Slavery to Civil Rights.” On display from October 16 to December 12, 2014, there will be an exhibit of selected documents, including materials from the Atlanta Student Movement Collection, at the Library’s Archives Research Center.
