Benjamin E. Mays Papers: Now Available in the Morehouse College Archives
Atlanta, GA — The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library is pleased to announce the opening of the Benjamin E. Mays Papers, a significant archival collection housed within the Morehouse College Archives. The collection provides valuable insight into the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894–1984), one of the most influential educators and civil rights advocates of the twentieth century. Dr. Mays served as president of Morehouse College from 1940 to 1967, the longest tenure in the institution’s history. Under his leadership, Morehouse experienced transformative growth, including increased enrollment, strengthened academic standards, and improved financial stability. A nationally respected Baptist minister and public intellectual, Dr. Mays was also a key mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a steadfast advocate for educational equity and social justice.
The Benjamin E. Mays Papers support research across a wide range of disciplines, including education, civil rights, religion, sociology, public policy, and African American history. Major research themes represented in the collection include African American education, institutional histories of historically Black colleges and universities, civil rights advocacy, religious leadership, community development, public health, organizational life, and cultural history. Scholars, students, and members of the public are invited to explore this important collection, which reflects Dr. Mays’
profound impact on education, leadership, and the advancement of civil rights. The Benjamin E. Mays Papers are now available for research through the Archives Research Center at the AUC Woodruff Library.
