The Woodruff AI SandBox
About the Woodruff AI Sandbox
The Woodruff AI Sandbox is a secure research and experimentation environment designed to support faculty exploration of emerging artificial intelligence tools. The sandbox provides a controlled space where scholars can test ideas, experiment with AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Claude, and evaluate how these technologies may support teaching, research, and scholarly productivity.
Developed by the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library, the sandbox lowers technical barriers for faculty who want to explore AI without building their own infrastructure. Participants can work within a contained environment that supports experimentation, workflow testing, and responsible use of generative AI tools.
The purpose of the AI Sandbox is to:
- Encourage thoughtful experimentation with artificial intelligence in academic settings
- Support faculty research, course development, and scholarly exploration
- Provide a structured environment for testing AI tools and workflows
- Foster collaboration and shared learning across the Atlanta University Center
While the environment is designed to support experimentation, faculty remain responsible for adhering to their institution’s data governance and classification policies when determining which materials or datasets may be used in the sandbox.
What You Can Do in the AI Sandbox
- Experiment with leading AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Claude to explore their capabilities in an academic context
- Test research workflows, including literature discovery, summarization, data interpretation, and draft development
- Explore teaching applications by designing assignments, evaluating AI‑assisted learning activities, or testing classroom use cases
- Evaluate AI‑supported productivity tools that may assist with coding, writing, analysis, or project planning
- Prototype new ideas for digital scholarship, interdisciplinary research, or emerging AI‑supported methodologies
- Collaborate and share insights with other faculty participating in the initiative to help shape responsible AI adoption across the Atlanta University Center
The Robert W. Woodruff Library AI Sandbox provides faculty with a secure, low-risk environment to explore and apply artificial intelligence in their academic work.
Designed for safe experimentation, the sandbox allows faculty to test AI tools and workflows without affecting live student data, institutional systems, or production platforms. This ensures innovation can occur freely while protecting privacy, security, and operational integrity.
